During WWII, a brutal civil war raged as partisans fought against Mussolini’s rule. A fascist death squad murdered my great-grandma’s boyfriend because of his resistance against the regime. My great-grandma spent the rest of her teenage years until the end of the war as a combat partisan, fighting, smuggling guns and bombs, and doing what she could to overthrow the government.

One of my great-grandpas was also a partisan. He and his men captured the German column that was trying to bring Mussolini out of Italy.

This song, "Bella Ciao," became associated with the Italian resistance and the partisans. Two-time Grammy winner, Ulises Bella (from the band Ozomatli), arranged this version that I sing today to honor my great-grandparents.
